Description | High Energy Seminar Speaker: Abe Seiden, UC Santa Cruz Title: ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector and Sensor R&D Host: Chertok Room: 285 Abstract: The HL – LHC upgrade will allow an order of magnitude increase in data collected at the LHC for studying physics at the Energy Frontier. This will require data taking with 200 interactions per crossing, which will be very challenging. Besides changes in electronics and triggering to deal with the high luminosity, ATLAS is planning a new type of silicon detector to measure the time of passage of particles to high accuracy to help sort particles from the different interactions. I will describe the new detector, called the High Granularity Timing Detector, and the sensor technology that is being developed to accurately measure particle hit times. |
