Description | Speaker: Tim Nelson Title: HPS and the Search for Dark Forces Host: John Conway Room: 432 Abstract: Dark-sector force carriers are a subject of increasing interest, motivated on fundamental grounds as well as by outstanding puzzles related to dark matter interactions and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon which could be resolved by a new U'(1) symmetry in the hidden sector. While such states are accessible to a number of experimental techniques, the region of masses and couplings of greatest interest makes fixed target experiments with high-intensity beams of electrons in the 1-10 GeV range ideal for direct searches. The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) is a new experiment at Jefferson Lab to search for a massive vector boson, A', in the mass range 20-1000 MeV/c^2 and couplings to electric charge εe, with ε^{2} ≈ 10^{−5} − 10^{−10}. The HPS experiment utilizes high-performance silicon tracking, electromagnetic calorimetry, and data acquisition to distinguish an A' signal from extreme backgrounds in a challenging experimental environment. In spring 2012, the HPS collaboration mounted a test run with a simplified version of the experiment, HPS Test, demonstrating the technical feasibility of the design and verifying background predictions for HPS. The experimental design and results from HPS Test and the plans for the upcoming full HPS experiment will be discussed along with possibilities for future experiments. |
