Description | Speaker: Toyoko Orimoto Title: Diphotons with the CMS Detector: Early Searches with 7 TeV LHC Data Abstract:The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment is a general purpose particle detector experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The CMS detector is instrumented with a high precision, high granularity electromagnetic crystal calorimeter, which will allow for a wide range of physics studies with photons. Such studies include the search for the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel, as well as the quest for new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as extra dimensions. I will describe a few early CMS physics searches with di-photons with 7 TeV LHC data, also highlighting the strengths of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter and the use of photons as an important diagnostic and calibration tool in the LHC start-up phase.
