Title: New Directions in Dark Matter Direct Detection

Abstract: Most models of WIMPs that possess sizable tree-level interactions with the electroweak bosons of the Standard Model are under ever increasing pressure from the relentless Moore's law like progression of today's direct detection experiments. This has led many to consider various scenarios in which the WIMP-nucleon scattering is suppressed at leading order. While much progress has been done in this regard, there remain many interesting avenues to explore. In this talk, I will summarize ongoing work in this direction within the context of the MSSM and other frameworks and discuss the viability to observe/rule-out a few of these types of models.

Abstract:
Neutrino detectors composed of liquid argon are uniquely sensitive to electron neutrinos. This is particularly interesting for the study of supernova neutrinos. One critical background to low energy electron neutrinos are muon and neutron reactions in argon that produce Cl-40. We performed the first Ar(n,p) cross section measurement from 15 to 50 MeV using the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory neutron beam at UC Davis.

Title: Superconducting detectors for super light dark matter

Abstract: I will present a new class of of superconducting detectors which are sensitive to O(meV) electron recoils from dark matter-electron scattering. Such devices could detect dark matter as light as the warm dark matter limit of O(keV). We will compute the rate of dark matter scattering off free electrons in a (superconducting) metal, including the relevant Pauli blocking factors. We will demonstrate that classes of dark matter consistent with terrestrial and cosmological/astrophysical constraints could be detected by such detectors with a moderate size exposure.

Title: Unlocking the Secrets of Exploding Stars with Terrestrial Neutrino Beams

Abstract: Supernova bursts are some of the most impressive phenomena in the known Universe and are predicted to occur within our Milky Way galaxy at a rate of roughly one per 20 years. A core-collapse supernova releases ~3x1053 ergs of energy in the form of neutrinos over a time interval of several tens of seconds. This is equivalent to about 3,000 times the total energy that our Sun will radiate over its entire 10 billion year life span. Supernova neutrinos can provide us intimate details of the burst along with a variety of more exotic particle physics phenomena. Potential signals of supernova neutrinos in future experiments will be discussed, along with an opportunity to characterize supernova neutrino signals in liquid argon time projection chambers for the very first time.

Title: Baryogenesis via Mesino oscillations

Abstract: In this talk I will describe a new mechanism for baryogenesis at the 1-200 MeV scale. In this mechanism of CP violation takes place via interference between oscillations and decays of mesinos - bound states of a scalar quark and antiquark and their CP conjugates. I will present the mechanism in a simplified model with four new fundamental particles, with masses between 300 GeV and 10 TeV, and show that some of the experimentally allowed parameter space can give the observed baryon-to-entropy ratio.

Title: Recent dark matter search results from DarkSide-50 using underground argon

Abstract: While there is tremendous astrophysical and cosmological evidence for dark matter, its precise nature is one of the biggest open questions in modern physics. Direct detection experiments are aiming to observe the scattering of dark matter off normal matter. With the liquid noble technology leading the way in WIMP sensitivity, no conclusive signals have been observed yet. The DarkSide experiment is looking for WIMP dark matter using a liquid argon target located deep underground at Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. DarkSide-50 is the first physics-capable detector in the DarkSide program, currently filled with argon obtained from underground sources, which is greatly reduced in radioactive 39Ar. DarkSide-50 recently made the most sensitive measurement of the 39Ar activity in underground argon and used it to set the strongest WIMP dark matter limit using liquid argon to date. Overviews of the DarkSide program and of the recent results from DarkSide-50 will be presented.
