Title: Quantum Field Theory of an Accelerated Observer in Moyal Spacetime
Host: Carlip
Room: 432
Abstract: In Minkowski space, an accelerated reference frame may be defined as one that is related to an inertial frame by a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations. Such an accelerated observer sees a causal horizon, and the quantum vacuum of the inertial observer appears thermal to the accelerated observer, also known as the Unruh effect. We argue that an accelerating frame may be similarly defined (i.e. as a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations) in noncommutative Moyal spacetime, and discuss the twisted quantum field theory appropriate for such an accelerated observer. Our analysis shows that there are several new features in the case of noncommutative spacetime: chiral massless fields in $(1+1)$ dimensions have a qualitatively different behavior compared to massive fields.

Title: Interesting Results with the Invariant Mass Distribution of Jet Pairs Produced in Association with a W Boson at CDF
Host: Robin Erbacher
Room: 416 PHY
Duration: 60 minutes
Abstract:
We present a study of the invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W boson using data collected with the CDF detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb^-1. The observed distribution has an excess in the 120-160 GeV mass range which is not described by current theoretical predictions within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. In particular we will discuss the properties and the significance of this excess.

Title: Generating a little hierarchy with accidental SUSY
Host: John Terning
Room: 432
Abstract: An emergent or accidental supersymmetry is used to address the little hierarchy problem in Randall-Sundrum models by naturally generating a hierarchy between the IR scale and the electroweak scale. Supersymmetry is broken on the UV brane which triggers the stabilization of the warped extra dimension at an IR scale of order 10 TeV. This causes the first two sparticle generations to decouple, thereby avoiding the supersymmetric flavour and CP problems, while an accidental R-symmetry protects the gaugino mass. The resulting low-energy sparticle spectrum consists of stops, gauginos and Higgsinos which are sufficient to stabilize the little hierarchy between the IR scale and the electroweak scale. Introducing a singlet Higgs field on the IR brane, ameliorates the supersymmetric little hierarchy problem, and allows Higgs masses up to 300 GeV.

Topic:Radiation and Nuclear Detection at Sandia National Labs
Abstract: I will give a brief overview of some of the work that we do at Sandia National Labs in Radiation and Nuclear Detection Systems. I will focus on projects that I have been involved in which primarily involve the imaging of fission spectrum (O(1MeV)) neutrons. Several neutron imagers will be described as well as results from deployments and demonstrations.
