Title: Positive Geometry of Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract: Over the last twenty years there has been a growing evidence that the standard formulation of Quantum field theory using path integrals and Feynman diagrams fails to explain unexpected simplicity and hidden symmetries of the scattering amplitudes. I show that in the case of planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory there exists a radically different picture for amplitudes as volumes of the "Amplituhedron" which is a higher-dimensional generalization of convex polygons to Grassmannians. In this approach, the central physical principles of locality and unitarity become derived concepts from the Amplituhedron geometry, while the usually hidden symmetries become manifest.

Title:The Long-Baseline Neutrino Program and the CAPTAIN Project
Abstract: The international neutrino community is developing a long-baseline
neutrino program based in the United States with a high-intensity
neutrino source and suite of near detectors at Fermilab, and a large
liquid argon time-projection chamber (TPC) in the Sanford Underground
Research Facility. This exciting program will determine the neutrino mass
ordering, search for leptonic CP violation, and over-constrain the leptonic
mixing matrix. The large underground detector enables a great deal more
physics such as searches for beyond-the-standard-model nucleon decay
and measurements of supernova neutrinos. In order to maximize its
potential, several challenges must be overcome. I will discuss the
program, the challenges, and how the Cryogenic Apparatus for Precision
Tests of Argon Interactions with Neutrinos (CAPTAIN) project addresses
the challenges.

Title: Effective Field Theories From String Compactification

Abstract: Though often viewed as a tool in the study of quantum gravity, one of the surprising outcomes from recent work in string theory is the wealth of insights it generates in the construction and study of low energy effective quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. In this talk we illustrate these points by focusing on the special case of six-dimensional superconformal field theories, a particularly interesting class of quantum field theories in which the constituent degrees of freedom are tensionless strings rather than particles. Using a strongly coupled phase of string theory known as F-theory, we show how to generate 6D SCFTs from the geometry of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds -- the extra dimensions of F-theory. We then explain how these geometric considerations allow us to classify possibly all 6D SCFTs. Quite surprisingly, these theories all have a rather simple universal structure which is conveniently captured by generalized quiver diagrams in which there is a single line of quiver nodes. We also discuss how these results fit in the broader context of string compactification.

Title: Improving the Energy Sensitivity of Massive Calorimeters to Search for Light Mass Dark Matter

Abstract: The kinetic energy transferred to nuclei during elastic scattering with a light mass dark matter candidate (100MeV-5GeV) is below the experimental energy threshold of current generation direct detection experiments and consequently, vast unexplored areas of parameter space could become accessible over the next decade with significant improvements in the sensitivity of large mass calorimeters.
In this talk, we discuss the progress made in achieving these sensitivity improvements by SuperCDMS over the past 3 years and why we believe an additional 2 orders of magnitude improvement in energy sensitivity will be achievable over the next decade.

Title: Spacetime Locality from Quantum Information

Abstract: One of the long-standing problems in quantum gravity is how to describe physics in regions that are far from any asymptotic boundary of spacetime. Solving this problem will be a necessary part of finding a complete theory of cosmology, and of black holes. In this talk I will describe recent progress on this question in the relatively well-understood (albeit unrealistic) case where the universe has a negative cosmological constant. I will explain how questions about physics located deep inside the bulk of such a spacetime can be reformulated in the boundary CFT in the language of quantum error correcting codes, which have been developed in the last two decades for the seemingly unrelated task of building a practical quantum computer. We will see that by reformulating things this way, we are able to illuminate various paradoxes and open questions.

Title: Charting the Space of Superconformal Field Theories -- The Power of Quantum Consistency

Abstract: Abstract: Superconformal field theories (SCFTs) provide the perfect beachhead for a full-scale attack on the space of all quantum field theories. I will argue that an abstract algebraic language is more suited to their study than the conventional framework of QFT, which is based on semiclassical expansions of explicit path integrals. Algebraic consistency is in fact surprisingly powerful, leading both to exact results for supersymmetric observables, and to an effective numerical strategy to determine non-supersymmetric ones. I will emphasize the ideas of theory space and the central role of the six-dimensional (2, 0) theory and the four-dimensional non-perturbative dualities tied to its existence.

Abstract: String Theory has provided us with a large class of solvable
toy models of strong coupling dynamics. These holographic toy models
provide valuable insights whenever the real physical system is beyond
our ability to do controlled calculations. I'll review important
insights that have been gained using this tool regarding viscosities,
energy loss, non-Fermi liquids, and non-equilibrium physics. I'll
discuss to what extend these theoretical developments can be used to
explain experimental data from the heavy-ion experiments at RHIC or LHC,
as well as the phase structure of high-Tc superconductors or other
strongly correlated systems.

Abstract: We explore the viability of dark matter annihilation into on-shell light mediators for indirect detection signals using the FERMI Galactic Center diffuse gamma ray excess as an application. Because the annihilation rate is set by the dark matter--mediator coupling, the Standard Model coupling can be made parametrically small to `hide' the dark sector by suppressing direct detection and collider signals. We demonstrate the predictions of this framework and present ongoing work on novel model building directions and complimentary experimental searches that are independent of any specific indirect detection signal.
