Title: ADS superpotential: a round trip to 3 dimensions
Host: John Terning
Room: 432
Abstract: In this talk I will discuss calculation of ADS superpotential in 3 and 4 dimensions in SUSY QCD with F<N flavors.
In 4d an explicit instanton calculation exists when $F=N-1$, while in other cases the superpotential can be obtained by decoupling massive flavors. In 3d a similar instanton-monopole calculation of the superpotential exist in a pure SYM theory. I will argue that in a 4d theory compactified on a circle, one could obtain superpotential for all values of F by including multi-monopole contributions to the superpotential. In large and small radius limits one then obtains the exact superpotentials in 3 and 4 dimensions.

Title: Evaluating the Gravitational Path Sum in Causal Set Quantum Gravity
Host: Steve Carlip
Room: 432
Abstract: The functional integral for gravity poses numerous challenges, one of which is simply deciding the nature of the set of spacetime histories over which one should sum. I will propose an answer to this question in terms of a natural discretization of gravity, which is based on causal structure and the imposition of a finite number of degrees of freedom in a compact region of spacetime. Given a recently discovered form for an action functional on such histories, I will present a numerical exploration of some features of the resulting functional integral, including a characterization of the phase space of the analytically continued sum. The results point to evidence that the dynamically preferred spacetime histories have a two dimensional character as one approaches the Planck scale.

Title: A Stop To Natural SUSY?
Host: Robin Erbacher
Room: 285
Abstract:
In 2012, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This scientific milestone represents the culmination of a nearly half-century effort that has consistently confirmed, through precision experimental measurements, the correctness of the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics. However, questions surrounding the mass value of the newly discovered Higgs boson as well as astronomical evidence for dark matter suggest that there are new particles and interactions awaiting discovery. A relatively light partner to the top quark (~ 1TeV) predicted by Supersymmetry could explain the observed value of the Higgs mass as well as have ties to dark matter. I will present the latest results of searches for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (top-squark) using 12.9 ifb of pp collision data at 13 TeV taken with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector.

Title:Cosmology and Signals of Strongly Interacting Dark Sectors
Host: Xiaochuan Lu
Room: 432
Abstract:Standard Model particles account for a small fraction of the matter content of the universe. If the remaining dark matter (DM) was ever in thermal equilibrium with itself or with the Standard Model (SM) sector, there must exist interactions that allowed its number density to be depleted to its present value.
An interesting possibility for achieving this arises in scenarios where the DM is composed of ``pions'' of a QCD-like dark sector. The leading number changing process in these theories is the annihilation of three pions into two pions, which heats the pion bath relative to the SM. Consistency with observations of large and small scale structure in the universe requires a non-zero coupling with SM states, suggesting a multitude of experimental probes. I will review the cosmological production of DM in these strongly interacting dark sectors and discuss the prospects for discovering them at fixed target experiments.

Title: Strong CP problem and axion on the lattice
Host: Markus Luty
Room: 285
Abstract: In QCD, while the phase in the quark masses are physical through the axial anomaly, it must be extremely small to be consistent with the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron. We review and discuss this mystery, called the strong CP problem, and present an approach from the lattice QCD. Especially, we discuss the temperature dependence of the topological property of QCD which has physical significance in the estimation of the QCD axion in the Universe.
