• born February 20, 1941 in the Piapot Reserve in Saskatchewan
• mother was a Cree Indian
• adopted, and raised in Maine
• started out as a folk singer
• wrote the protest classic "Universal Soldier" for her debut album
• moved on to use a variety of influences including orchestral styles and Native American song patterns
• now lives in Hawaii
