- born February 20, 1941 in the Piapot Reserve in Saskatchewan
- mother was a Cree Indian
- adopted, and raised in Maine
- started out as a folk singer
- wrote the protest classic "Universal Soldier" for her debut album
- moved on to use a variety of influences including orchestral styles and Native American song patterns
- now lives in Hawaii
