• raised by a Dutch immigrant family in a small town in Ontario
• educated at Dutch Calvinist primary and secondary schools
• received an honours BA in philosophy and English literature from Calvin College in Michigan
• briefly worked in journalism (on the CBC's The Journal)
• worked as third and second assistant director on several films such as David Cronenberg's The Fly
• after a five week film course completed first film Passion: A Letter in 16 mm, starring Linda Griffiths
