• Norwegian-Canadian actor who began acting in tent shows and stock productions, to the dismay of his father, a minister
• made his Broadway debut in Street Scene (1929)
• went to Hollywood two years later to repeat his role in the screen version
• subsequently appeared in more than 100 films, portraying a variety of character roles, often as a well-meaning patsy
• played the father of the Dionne Quintuplets in several films in the late 30s
• appeared on innumerable TV shows
