• educated St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia (communications); Columbia (adult education); Northwestern
• TV and stage director who won acclaim for A Raisin in the Sun (1961)
• won a Genie (the Canadian Oscar) for his semi-autobiographical feature, The Bay Boy (1984), starring Liv Ullmann and Kiefer Sutherland.
• Petrie's wife Dorothea is a producer and both of their sons, Daniel Jr. and Donald, are directors.
