- born on March 11, 1930 in Montreal, Quebec
- graduated in medicine from the University of Montreal but never practiced
- became a student actor at Theatre du Nouveau Monde, Montreal and then at Cours Simon, Paris
- his first film Mouvement Perpetuel (1949) won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival (1950)
- his TV series L'Ecole de la Peur won the Prix Frignon
- in 1955 he began work at the National Film Board of Canada
- made several prize winning films including:A Chairy Tale (1957) (with Norman McLaren), Les Mains Nettes (1958), A Tout Prendre (1963), and Comment Savoir (1966)
- Mon Oncle Antoine won eight Etrogs at the Canadian Film Awards in 1971, and best picture at the Chicago Film Festival
- as a nationalist and separatist, he declined the award of Officer of the Order of Canada
