- began acting at university, continued in Seattle
- in 1948 moved to England, where he developed a reputation as a fine actor on the stage and in occasional films
- impressed Broadway audiences with several roles in the late 50s
- won a Tony Award in 1962 for his performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
- from the early 60s he has played intelligent, often introspective leads and supporting roles in occasional Hollywood films and in many TV productions
