- born July 21, 1926, in Toronto, Ontario
- studied music at the Royal Conservatory
- studied theatre at Malvern Collegiate Institute, Toronto
- served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II
- earned a BA at Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1950
- started out driving a cab and occasionally acting on stage and radio
- moved to London, wrote scripts and acted for the BBC
- returned to Toronto and became a leading director of TV programs for the CBC (1952-1958)
- directed musical-variety shows for CBC in New York (1958-1961) featuring such performers as Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, Harry Belafonte, and Andy Williams
- directed "Your Hit Parade," "The Andy Williams Show," two Harry Belafonte specials, "The Fabulous Fifties," Danny Kay's television debut, "The Broadway of Lerner and Lowe" and award-winning Judy Garland specials
- won three Emmy Awards.
- turned to feature films in the 1960s
- skilled technician with ability to elicit fine performances from his casts
- achieved recognition for The Cincinnati Kid (1965) and In the Heat of the Night (1967), which won five Academy awards
- Moonstruck (1987) was a box-office success which won Oscars for best actress (Cher), best supporting actress (Olympia Dukakis) and best screenplay (John Patrick Shanley)
- in 1986 he established the Canadian Centre for Advanced Films Studies
- was made a companion of the Order of Canada in 1982
- has won the TV Directors Award (1961), and Golden Globe Award (1966)
