• from 1876 to 1886 he lost only six of 300 races
• won the Canadian championship in 1877 in Toronto
• won the American championship in 1879 on the Allegheny River
• in May 1879 he beat the English champion by eleven lengths
• on November 15, 1880 he beat the world champion, Australian Edward Trickett, by three lengths on the River Thames
• a total of $500,000 was bet on the outcome of the race
• in 1884 he lost the championship to Australian William Beach
• played by Nicholas Cage in "The Boy in Blue"
